The Roomba video: the assignment was to—in small groups—create an experimental film. Although the presentation of this film is a little rough the conception process is strong. It is a different way of looking at an everyday item. A Roomba is a type of vacuum cleaner that is supposed to clean the house without supervision. We looked at it as something that could more or less think for itself. We decided to create an instrument out of it where is composes the music.
The Roomba creates the music. When it hits a color on the wood walls it makes a tone and changes the color of the screen accordingly. The top right Roomba has the long notes. When that Roomba escapes from the square the song ends.
It would be interesting to make the Roomba an interactive piece. If there were four Roombas playing in different cities in different parts of the world. It would make a global instrument. Making a website where people could see them all playing together or visit a location were they are and see the different instruments play. At the moment the Roomba is the composer of the music, but what if someone else composed and the Roomba followed those instructions? Maybe it plays Chopin?
